Puri
Host of the annual Jagannath chariot procession
The coastal town of Puri has been long since known for its 11th Century temple – Jagannath Puri, with shrines to an unusual crowd of gods among the Hindu pantheon. The annual procession of Lord Jagannath’s chariot or rath and the throngs have given English the word “juggernaut”, signifying an unstoppable force. Puri is considered one among the seven most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus, and the nearby Konark Sun Temple ruins make for an interesting visit.
