Forest Dye Paintings with Krishna
Learn natural forest dye paintings with the last Kurumba tribal artist
In the Velaricombai village in the Nilgiris range fringing Ooty, Kotagiri and Coonoor, Krishna is the last Kurumba tribal artist who practices the ancient tradition of forest dye paintings. He makes his dyes from plants that grow in and around his village, grinds them or mixes them in water, as per the tradition and paints in the Kurumba style quite akin to the Warli tribal art of Central India. As his tribe pursues education and city jobs, no one from the next generation is keen on learning this tradition. Spend an afternoon with Krishna learning to make paints, drawing the stick figure like characters in a farm or village setting, and hearing about what inspires his paintbrush!
