Dambulla
Sri Lanka's best preserved cave temples
Dambulla, to the north-east of Colombo boasts the best preserved cave temples complexes in Sri Lanka dating back to the 7th Century BC. Some of the cave temples have statues and paintings, that were added over time and give evidence to the time and tide of religious figures from Buddha, to Vishnu and Ganesh. The Ibbankatuwa prehistoric burial site, a short distance away, with human skeletons dating 2700 years before today, throw up interesting proof of settlement before the influences from the Indian mainland.
