Sanchi
India's oldest stone structure
The word Sanchi conjures up an image of the stupa – an inclusion in every history textbook, yet its significance as India’s oldest stone structure dating to the 3rd Century BCE is often forgotten. The Sanchi stupa, a mound-shaped brick structure constructed over the remains of Buddha, was rediscovered in the 19th Century, restored and are now listed among UNESCO’s World Heritage sites for their architectural and religious significance.
