Kanyakumari
The southern-most tip of India's peninsula
Ancient navigators and cartographers, provided sailing directions on maps for the Cape Comorin, as it represented the southern-most tip of the Indian subcontinent, spawning a legacy of commerce and trade, piracy and pilfering, colonies and missionaries. Mentioned by Greek philosophers, and in the Indian scriptures, Kanyakumari, the newer name of this pearl-trading port, has long been a centre of art, culture and religion. With numerous temples, a location at the confluence of three great seas: the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, and serene beaches, Kanyakumari is today a place of interest for tourists and pilgrims alike.
