Tangalle, with its name in Sinhalese meaning a ‘rock projection’, is a coastal, fishing city with distinct rocky outcrops. With nearby attractions like the Mulkirigala rock temple, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary and the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project, Tangalle is a centre of tourism. The city also hosts an old Dutch fort that is used in present times as a prison.
