Galle
A shoreside walled bastion
The seaside town of Galle is located in the south of Sri Lanka. The walled city has stood since the early 16th century through the colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. The Portuguese took Galle from the Sinhala kings in 1587 and erected the first fortifications. The Dutch landed in 1640 and built a formidable line of defence, ringing the walled town with 10 bastions.
