This journey across the culture rich states of Southern India begins in Chennai followed by a visit to the 7th Century bas-reliefs at Mahabalipuram on the ocean’s edge, and then onwards to Pondicherry, a town steeped in rich French colonial heritage. Explore the ancient temple towns of Madurai, discover the magic of the chettiar mansions and the unique local cuisine, cruise through Kerala’s enchanting backwaters and soak in the rich colonial heritage of Fort Cochin. The trip comes to its crescendo at Mumbai – a bustling metropolis, home to Bollywood and a mélange of cultures, people and architecture.

Upon arrival at Chennai International Airport, you will be met by a Travel Scope representative and transferred to your accommodations and assist with Check-In.

Leisurely wake up and breakfast at your hotel. This morning you will visit the Rock Carvings and Shore Temples at Mahabalipuram, located at a short distance from your hotel.

 

The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure or select from one of the following options:-

 

·  Visit to Dakshin Chitra – A Centre for living traditions of art and architecture of India.

·  A Cultural walk of Chennai with an expert.

·  Tiffin at Saravana Bhawan a chain of restaurants serving best of South Indian dishes.

·  Shopping in Chennai.

Today, you may choose between a day trip to Pondicherry or a visit to the temple town of Kancheepuram.

 

PONDICHERRY The former capital of French territories in India, Pondicherry was established in 1674 and still retains a distinct Gallic flavor. Auroville or the City of Dawn conceived as a utopian paradise by The Mother, Mirra Alfassa, was planned as a futuristic international city where people from different religions and nations would live together in peace.

 

KANCHEEPURAM is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. It is a spectacular Temple city known as ìthe city of thousand templesî, which reflects the glorious traditions of South India and is also renowned for its thriving handloom industry.

After breakfast this morning, you will be transferred to the Chennai Airport for your short flight to Madurai. Upon arrival a Travel Scope representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodations.

 

Following a lunch at the hotel, you will begin your exploration of Madurai with a visit to the temple complex of Lord Sundareshwar (Shiva) and Goddess Meenakshi. Famed for its many carved and painted halls, this magnificent 16th century temple has the tallest Gopuram (temple gateway) in the world.

After breakfast this morning, you will explore the older parts of Madurai City on a walk and visit a resident school to see young students being initiated into vedic studies.

 

You will then commence your drive to Karaikudi in Chettinad, with an enroute visit to the temple of Lord Ganesha at Pullayarpatti. Upon arrival in Karaikudi Check-Into your accommodations. The remainder of your day will be at leisure.

This morning you will drive to Kanadukathan village to explore the mansions of the Chettiars. You will then visit a workshop at Athangudi Village to see the art of making handmade terracotta tiles.

 

This afternoon you explore the antique street at Karaikudi with your guide to see antique vendors, visit a weaving Centre for Chettinad Silk Sarees, or engage in a cooking session at your hotel in the company of the Chef.

After breakfast this morning, you will commence on your drive to Trichy Airport, to board a flight to Cochin. Enroute you will stop at Namanasamudram to visit the temple of the Ayyanar cult who worship their gods as protective deities. You can see rows of terracotta horses dedicated by devotees for fulfillment of their wishes.

 

On arrival in Cochin, you will be met by a Travel Scope representative and transferred to your accommodations.

This evening will be at your leisure.

Your exploration of Cochin begins with a short walk through the Chinese fishing nets, and a visit to St. Francis Church ñ the first European Church built in India. You will then continue by car to the 16th Century Mattancherry Palace. Walk through the antique market to the Paradesi Synagogue ñ the oldest synagogue in India. The remainder of the afternoon day will be at your leisure.

 

WHEN IN COCHIN TRAVEL SCOPE RECOMMENDS: -

• A History walk of Mattanchery to learn about the spice trade.

• Sunset cruise on Cochin Harbor.

• Local ferry ride and visit the vegetable market at Eranakulam.

• An evening with an Indian family with lessons on home cooking.

  • Kumarakom

After breakfast this morning, you will transfer Cochin to Kumarakom through the scenic back roads. Commence your journey to explore the backwaters of Kerala on board your private houseboat at the Pallaturuthy boat jetty.

 

Spend the day exploring the tranquil backwaters. This bewildering labyrinth of shimmering waterways, composed of lakes, canals, lined with dense vegetation preserves rural Keralan lifestyle that is completely cut off from the outside world. While on the cruise you will get to witness the real culture and life style of Kerala countryside.

 

Your cruise turns back from Thotapally and terminates at Pallaturuthy, where your car and driver will be waiting to transfer you to your resort hotel in Kumarakom. Check-Into your accommodations.

This morning you will be driven to a private farm located on the edge of the backwaters, where you will be the personal guests of the farm owners. Visit the farm in the company of the owners followed by a cooking demonstration of the family’s signature dishes and a sumptuous Kerala lunch.

 

After lunch you will drive back to your accommodations. Enroute visit village homes to see women producing choir using coconut fiber.  You can also stop to visit the temple at Vaikom that houses a traditional school of music. A speedboat ride is also possible for a more adventurous for experience.

 

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure for enjoying the facilities at the hotel or sign up for an Ayurveda treatment at the Spa.

After breakfast this morning you will be transferred to Cochin to board an early afternoon flight to Mumbai. Upon arrival, a Travel Scope representative will meet you at the Mumbai airport and transfer you to your accommodations and assist in check-in.

After breakfast, go on a tour of the city to explore it’s architectural heritage, starting with a visit to the Jain Temple at Malabar Hill. You will then drive up to Dhobhighat, the Mega Laundry site, where the entire city’s laundry comes for a wash. Arrive in time at Churchgate to see the Dabbawalas sorting lunch boxes for distribution. After lunch, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.
