A river-carved pilgrimage

In a region torn asunder by civil unrest, the picturesque town of Pahalgam bears witness to the enduring nature of faith and religion. Between the months of July and August each year, the pilgrimage to Amarnath, a glacial cave housing a natural lingam associated with Lord Shiva, commences from Pahalgam, and the town is thronged by the faithful, of different ages, beliefs and rituals. Tourists continue to be drawn to Pahalgam throughout the year because of its breathtaking location in a valley carved by the Lidder river.
