Jabalpur
The gateway to Madhya Pradesh's forested heart
Situated on the banks of the Narmada, a river that neatly divides India into two sections of northern river plains and mountains and the southern peninsula, Jabalpur is the cultural capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh. The central location of the city has welcomed ethnic groups from across the country, and the Gond clan that once had a kingdom in these parts, is largely a forest-dwelling, tribal population today, with a blurred identity and a lifestyle torn between traditional and tertiary economy.
