Guruvayur
Host of an anuual Carnatic music festival
A small town in the state of Kerala, Guruvayur perhaps gets its name from a corruption of the word for ‘seaside village’ in the local language. Guruvayur is famous for the temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, and the lore that surrounds the idol, and may be as old as five thousand years, though no historical records exist to prove this. Today, Guruvayur plays host to the Thiruvaiyaru Thyagaraja Aradhana, a Carnatic music festival that pays homage to the poet-saint Thyagaraja.
