Calicut
A once-glorious port along the silk & spice routes
A name synonymous with silk, and as an important link along the ancient silk and spice trade routes, Calicut’s economy still thrives on a port that lured Vasco da Gama to Indian shores. Today, the trade of coffee, pepper, rubber, coconut from plantations across the state of Kerala find their way to global markets. Calicut is usually a transit point for tourists that connects the coastal stretches of Kerala to the mountainous zones of the Western Ghats and the Tamil Nadu’s temple-strewn coast beyond.
