Bhubaneshwar
A city of temples tracing the history of Odissi dance
One of eastern India’s most visited places, Bhubaneshwar, the capital of the state of Orissa, is famous for its superb Hindu temples dating from the 7th to 13th centuries. With over a thousand temples, Bhubaneshwar has earned the epithet ‘city of temples’, many of which depict the ancient dance form, Odissi. The nearby towns of Lalitagiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri also host rock-cut Buddhist caves and stupas, and form an important pilgrimage route for Buddhists. Bhubaneshwar also celebrates the local Odiya culture through its handicrafts, sand artistry and sculpting.
