Excursion to Sivasagar
Delve into the culture of the Ahom tribe
Sivasagar, located along a distributary of the Brahmaputra river, is the old capital of the Ahoms who ruled Assam for 600 years before the arrival of the British. The area still has a number of old monuments built by the Ahoms; the most significant being the huge man made tank ‘Sivasagar’ from which the town got its name. A little to the north, lies the Ahom Palace in Garhgaon – a stone-and-wood structure first built in 1540. The palace was later destroyed and in 1752, a new seven-storeyed palace took its place – which can still be seen in much of its former glory today. Visit Sivasagar for a glimpse into the Ahom tribe – and learn of their intriguing culture.
