A festival of lights for the gods illuminated by a thousand oil lamps

The word Dev Deepawali literally means the Diwali of the gods – and was proclaimed as such, after Lord Shiva’s victory over three demons of Tripura. In Varanasi, the festival takes on a special significance, as bathing in the Ganges is deemed holy – and devotees flock to the ghats just before moonrise, for a sacred ‘snana’ or dip. As it is the festival of lights, the Ganges is illuminated by a thousand oil lamps set adrift with flowers and prayers – and the sight of the flickering flames carried downstream is mesmerizing.
